AFTER DORIAN, CPPE’S SULFACID® INSTALLATION IN JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA IS BACK IN OPERATION

CPPE of Luxembourg-Dommeldange, the SULFACID® technology supplier to global copper, fertilizer, and metallurgical companies, is extending its know-how to the food flavour and cosmetics fragrance industry in the United States. Just a few weeks ago, in Jacksonville, Florida, CPPE’s SULFACID® installation which removes the gaseous air pollutant sulphur dioxide (SO2) was put into operation for Symrise, a global producer of flavours and fragrances. As Hurricane Dorian was approaching, it had to be shut down but was now successfully restarted.

  • CPPE’s installation was completed in just two years from the presentation of the offer
  • It’s the first SULFACID® installation used in the food flavour and cosmetics fragrance industry
  • SULFACID® guarantees nearly 100% SO2 removal efficiency thus providing clean air to the residential areas surrounding Symrise’s plant in Jacksonville
  • SULFACID® is part of the circular economy

At Symrise, during several distillation and extraction processes, sulphur and other substances are removed. CPPE’s SULFACID® technology allows for the usage of the removed sulphur as a fuel and the conversion of the SO2 into a sellable product: sulphuric acid.

Reducing atmospheric SO2 has positive impacts on both the environment and human health. SO2 is known to form acid rain, which is detrimental to the natural environment and causes respiratory problems in humans.

As the Symrise site in Jacksonville is surrounded by residential areas, CPPE’s process gas desulfurization installation had to be constructed according to the highest environmental standards – not just in terms of safety and health but also considering the impact of noise, odor, and visual nuisance.

The food flavours and cosmetics fragrances produced at Symrise’s plant in Jacksonville are used, among others, in skin cream, skin protection (sun protection), hair care, hair dye, human and pet food, clothes care, and household cleaning products.
